Ladybug Crochet Baskets

It's a Jewish ritual to give a fancy food gifts to friends on Purim.
I have dressed these baskets as ladybug.

*** Crochet baskets can be purchase in my shop on Marmelada Market ***

Basket Base

I used t-shirt yarn (95% Recycled cotton and 5% Lycra) and 10mm size hook (for the whole basket).

This part is worked in seamless round, do not join.

With red:

rnd 4) 2 sc in st, 1 sc in next 2 st. around (24)
rnd 5) 2 sc in st, 1 sc in next 3 st. around (30)

Mini Bean Stitch (mbs)

Needs odd number of stitches.

With red:
rnd 5) 2sc in st, 1 sc in next 3 st - 5 times
2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 2 st, 2 sc in next st (31)

rnd 6) slst, ch1, turn, sc in back loops only around, slst

For the mini bean stitch I used this video tutorial.

insert hook yo (yarn on) - 2 loops on hook
yo, insert hook in same stitch
yo and pull through all 4 loops
ch1

rnd 7) ch1, turn, *mbs (mini bean stitch), skip st.* around
the last st. is mbs, slst in first mbs of rnd, ch2, turn

rnd 8-9) crochet mbs in to the side of the mbs of previous round

Chang to black:
rnd 9) ch1, Hhdc around slst
Fasten off

Long Single Crochet

For this stitch you can use one of these two video tutorials:
1. Very short video tutorial.
2. Video tutorial in Hebrew, but very easy to understand (from 1:15 min - 4:30 min).

With red:
rnd 6) slst, ch1, turn, sc in back loops only around, slst

rnd 7) ch1 *sc, long sc* around, slst

rnd 8) ch1 * long sc, sc* arund, slst

rnd 9) as rnd 7

rnd 10) as rnd 8

Chang to black:
rnd 11) as rnd 7

rnd 12) slst around
Fasten off

Split Single Crochet (ssc)

For this stitch you can use this video tutorial.

*skip 1 st
5 dc in same st.
skip 1 st.

slst into first sc of this round
Fasten off

Single Crochet and Chain Stitch

With red:
rnd 6) slst, ch1, turn, sc in back loops only around (do not join with slst)

rnd 7-9) *sc, ch1, skip 1 st.* around
in 8 and further on the sc is worked in the chain from previous round
at the end of round 9 slst.

Chang to black:
rnd 10) *sc, ch1, skip 1 st.* around, slst

yo, insert hook in next st.
insert hook in skiped st. (3 loops on hook)
yo and pull through all 3 loops

With red:
rnd 6) slst, ch1, turn, sc in back loops only around slst
or you can slst around rnd 6 for starting the stitch from the bottom of the basket (take into consideration that the first round of the twisted stitch will be a bit difficult).

rnd 7-9) ch1, twst around, slst in first twst in this round

Chang to black:

Pattern is written in American terms.

Stiffen Stuff (fabric stiffening spray)

- The base of this basket is worked in a seamless round until the last raw. Do not join rounds, unless instructed to do so. Use stitch marker to identify the first stitch in each round.
- Repeat the directions between * and ** around.
- For the Spike Cluster Stitch I used moogly video tutorial.

Wrap tightly a jar with plastic wrap and place it upside down on a working surface. Place the basket on the jar and completely spray it with the stiffener.
Let dry overnight or as needed, until the basket is completely dry, you will be able to easily pull it off the jar.
